Surely he took up our pain
and bore our suffering,
yet we considered him punished by God,
stricken by him, and afflicted
As Christians we seldom realise the great length that Jesus went to on the cross. Even when you watch the movie “the Passion”it does not really bring home the spiritual pain that Jesus endured, when He became sin for us.
When Jesus was in the garden at Gethsemane, he prayed to God that if there was any other way for him not to become sin (for the cup to pass), then he would be glad if it could be done. But he knew within him, that there was indeed no other way. The horror of Jesus becoming sin for us all, was so horrific as he knew the intensity of what lay ahead, that he sweated blood. He did that so he could bear our pain. The real pain was the pain of paying for sin. It was not physical pain of crucifixion, although that was such a terrible punishment that even the Romans abolished it in AD300 and they were the cruelest generation known to man. But it was to spare us the pain of paying for our sins – being cut off from God that Jesus died for us. What a saviour.
On an aside point, many Christians pray and say “ïf it be your will” as if we are just victims to the random will of God. Then they say it was because Jesus prayed that in Gethsemane. Jesus did not pray “if it be your will” as a question. You see that is the problem with that prayer. Christians when they pray for the sick, pray Lord heal this person “if it be thy will” and that is crazy. Jesus when he prayed said “nevertheless thy will be done” and he knew what the Fathers will was. It was for him to be crucified, so that he could bear our pain. And that is why as soon as Jesus prayed that he immediately got uo and said to his disciples, come let’s go the time has come.
We thank you Jesus for carrying our sins on the cross.
